I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what I’d like to share in future newsletters and blogs. It’s a strange one for me as I’ve worked in corporate communications for nearly twenty years so I thought that writing for my own business would come easily. But then I realised: it’s a completely different task to write about me and my art, rather than a large corporate company and its employees!
So it’s become one of those tasks that I’ve put off. I’ve signed up for other artists’ newsletters in the hope of inspiration - but I’ve realised that the most important thing for me is that whatever I do share feels “like me”. And one area that does sit true with me, in life and in relation to my art, is the turn of the seasons. So as we usher in autumn here in the UK, I felt like it was the time to get my keyboard out and write my first blog.
I’ve always loved the September ‘back to school’ feeling. Seeing the dew on the grass and dragon breath on my sons’ lips as we walk to school in the morning takes me right back to my own childhood. These days, I’ve realised how important spending time in nature is for both my wellbeing and my art inspiration. I love taking photos when I’m out walking the dog - sometimes of the big views, but often of the small details. Some of the things I’ll be looking out for this autumn are…
Toadstools and fabulous fungi
Acorns and shiny new conkers
Dewy grasses and bejewelled cobwebs
The changing colours of the trees
The darkening autumnal sky that signals it’s time to go home for hot chocolate
Blackberries and rosehips
The early evening sunsets
Piles of leaves to crunch through
Pumpkin picking and carving
When I’m back in the studio, the memories of these moments and details often become the basis for my work, be it the colours, textures, or composition. I can’t wait to see where this autumn takes me :)
